Leadership Training with Our New TEC Interns

We’re excited to welcome our new Teen Executive Committee interns who are starting their six month internship this month. This leadership training is the first in a series. Each training helps build their skills as leaders and managers who work behind the scenes at Give Us The Floor.

Two of our teen members on our journalist team get to interview Sharon Lin. She’s the founder of StuyHacks and is a contributing writer for the Huffington Post. “Teens Take The Floor” (Free Event!)

When: Saturday, Nov. 12, 2016 2:00-5:00pm

Where: Sonoma

We’ve teamed up with The Club in Sonoma for our biggest event of the season! Teens from around the Bay Area are coming together to speak out about body image and academic pressure in artistic ways. Open mic performances, teen created short films, photography and blog posts, and a photo booth all help to make this a fun time.

Club Rush day at ACHS

One of our Give Us The Floor clubs, established by some of our teen members, is going to be spreading the word about our program at ACHS. It’s a fun way to get more teens involved so that they can connect with a variety of teens from all over to creatively express themselves about the challenges they face.

TEENS TAKE THE FLOOR

Free Summer Program

Choose how you want to address challenges that teens face: make a video, photography, original music, blog posts, slam poetry, creative coding, or visual art.

Professionals will guide you, if you want, to complete your creation. You will learn new skills or become more advanced, and you can build a portfolio for jobs and college.

You can also become a trained discussion leader to enhance your communication skills to better support your peers during conversations, or to lead a peer discussion group about a challenge you’ve faced and earn community service hours.

Oakland Museum Interviews GUTF Teens about Black Panther Exhibit

Where: Oakland Museum of California

Last fall, curators from the Oakland Museum asked for our teen members’ feedback on the museum’s plans for their Black Panther 50th anniversary exhibit. Now they’re creating a short documentary to feature a handful of people who they've spoken to about the exhibit over the last two years, and they chose to interview some of our members for the film!

Cheer on Teen Slam Poets at the Grand Slam Finals

When: Saturday, April 16 7:30-9:30pm

Where: San Francisco

Join us to support Youth Speaks’ teen slam poets as they perform for a chance to represent the Bay Area in Washington DC for Brave New Voices. This Olympic-style poetry competition will feature hundreds of poets from throughout the Bay Area and Northern California. Tickets are $5 for youth under 24 and $10 for adults. The first 10 Give Us The Floor teen members who register attend for free.

November 2015

STEAM Carnival Training (STEAM: Science, Tech, Engineering, Art, Math)

When: Nov. 5, 6:00-8:00pm
Where: Pier 48, San Francisco

This training is for our teen members who want to be trained to help run the carnival, but you MUST fill out a volunteer application and attend the training in order to help and earn volunteer credit.

The STEAM carnival is an incredible event: a carnival reimagined with fire, lasers, robots and more. You can choose your role: Game Operator, Demonstration Support, Ticketing & Check-In, Backstage, Merchandise or Workshop Support. You’ll need to commit to at least one 4-hour slot, but you can do more than one if you want!

3 days at STEAM Carnival (STEAM: Science, Tech, Engineering, Art, Math)

When: Nov. 6, 7 and 8 10:00am - 7:00pm

Teen Members: we need your help at our booth! We're going to have an expressive photo booth and a contest with prizes like an iPad Mini. Our members’ creations will be on display. You need to sign up for at least one 4-hour slot to help at our booth.

Private Film Screening for Teens

When: Friday, Oct. 2 7-10pm
Where: SF Art Institute, San Francisco

Thanks to our partner Art&Film SF, we are happy to offer you the opportunity to watch “Mommy” in a private screening. Directed by 25 year old Xavier Dolan, it got the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2014. It is the story of a teenage boy who has spent three years at a psychiatric institution after his father's death and who is coming back to live with his mother who has trouble with his violent outbursts and emotional needs. Watch the trailer. Join us and dozens of other teens to watch, think and talk.

The Oakland Museum Wants Our Feedback on Their Upcoming Black Panther Exhibit

When: Friday, Oct. 23 7:00-9:00pm
Where: Oakland Museum of California

Museum curators asked for our members to come and givefeedback about their exhibit plans for the 50th anniversary of the Black Panther Party. They’ll ask for teens’ input and we’ll engage in a, discussion about injustice and how this movement and time period relates to us today.

Teens who are on our creative team and want to express the challenges they face through photography can attend this online workshop with professional photographer Chris Diaz. He’s tailoring the workshop to fit registrants levels of experience so that you get the most out of this valuable opportunity to build your skills.

Oakland Youth Leadership Conference

When: Saturday, Oct. 31 8:00am-3:00pm
Where: Waterfront Hotel, Oakland

This conference for youth is put on by the nonprofit Civic Pride and provides college and career workshops, community service opportunities, and more! We’ll have a booth to spread awareness about our program.

September 2015

A 5-week creative project for 72 8th graders who will address the challenges they face by creating videos, photos, and blogs

When: Sept. 16 - Oct. 21
Where: American Canyon Middle School

English Language Arts teacher Sarah Knutson collaborated with Give Us The Floor to run a project based learning unit. GIve Us The Floor will provide weekly workshops with professionals to help students develop and produce their creations. At the end of the 5 weeks, Give Us The Floor members will vote on their 2 favorite ones in each category and those creations will be published on our blog and promoted on social media.

Discussion Group Meetings

When: July 7, 14, 21, 28 Time: 1:00-3:00pm
Where: San Francisco

This group will be led by a trained teen discussion leader. It’s for any teen interested in participating in weekly conversations that deal with a particular challenge teens face. We’re here to share, listen and learn from one another in a safe, supportive teen-led community.

All teen participants must be approved beforehand by the adult team for security purposes.

Free Minds, Free People National Conference

When: July 10 & 11
Where: Laney College in Oakland

This conference brings together teachers, high school and college students, and community-based activists from across the country to build a movement to promote education as a tool for liberation. We will have a booth run by GIve Us The Floor teen ambassadors. Our members can attend workshops.

This training prepares you to lead a discussion group if you want or you can just use what you learn in everyday life to help others and to reach your goals.
